The mission of the Olympia Symphony Orchestra is " to provide the highest quality live music to enrich, educate and entertain an expanding audience" and since 1998, businesses and individuals alike have been working with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra to introduce students to live symphonic music. The 2007-2008 Season brings some changes to the Education Program that will be a better opportunity for our young musicians to experience the symphony. Some of these changes were featured in The Olympian on October 16, 2006 in an article titled: Students see effort behind music.

Education Concert

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 10:30 & 12:30
Education Concert for elementary and middle schools
Schools who have signed up through the OSO office will be bussed to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts to experience a live symphony orchestra concert.  Maestro Huw Edwards will cover everything from concert etiquette to music history, and will have demonstrations of each section of the orchestra.  Children will hear selections from the October 5th concert, and teachers will have the opportunity to prepare for this event by receiving a lesson plan with vocabulary for their class.  For more information, contact the OSO office.

Attend a Symphony DRESS REHEARSAL:

Instead of issuing vouchers for the concert, OSO is opening the Sunday afternoon dress rehearsal for student observers. This will include a 15 minute introduction by Maestro Huw Edwards to the students, explaining some of the finer points of playing symphony music. The students will also get an opportunity to hear Maestro Edwards coach the orchestra as they play the music for that evening’s performance, which should be an eye opening experience.

Note: you will be attending a working dress rehearsal of the Olympia Symphony Orchestra.  Please respect the time of the musicians and staff and do not disrupt the rehearsal. OSO reserves the option of dismissing any or all rehearsal observers at any time.

STUDENT RUSH TICKETS:

  • Bring your student ID to the Box Office.
  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to the concert
  • Receive Half-price tickets (plus a $2.50 ticket fee)
  • Enjoy the concert!

MASTER CLASSES:

Contact the OSO office two weeks prior to each concert to determine if a Master Class will be presented.

POCO A POCO:

Poco a Poco, a musical term meaning “little by little,” presents OSO musicians in classrooms and auditoriums in South Puget Sound area schools. OSO enriches curricula by bringing the excitement of live music and enduring learning directly to students.
